Interesting crop of movies coming in the next few weeks:

October 1st

  • Shark Tale
When the son of the shark boss (De Niro) of a crime family appears to have been killed, a fast-talking fish named Oscar (Smith) poses as the infamous killer “Sharkslayer”. As he is soon to find out, his claim may have serious consequences.

How can you argue with Will Smith, Robert DeNiro, Rene Zellweger, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Martin Scorsese, Peter Falk and Ziggy Marley?

  • National Treasure
Benjamin Franklin Gates (Cage) descends from a family of treasure-seekers who’ve all hunted for the same thing: a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers prior to the Revolutionary War. Ben’s close to discovering its whereabouts, as is his competition, though the FBI is also hip to the hunt.

As soon as I saw the trailer, it was obvious this would be out around thanksgiving to stir the national spirit, but did they have to cast Sean Bean (an Englishman) in the role of the bad-guy? Nicolas Cage does a great turn as a quirky main character, and I am sure that the interplay between Nic and Sean will be fun to watch.

  • Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
A month into her relationship with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget Jones (Zellweger) is growing increasingly uncomfortable. Apart from discovering that he’s a conservative voter, she has to deal with a new boss, a strange contractor, and the worst vacation of her life. And then there’s Daniel Cleaver (Grant) popping up again….

The original Bridget Jones movie was fun - when we went to see it, there was only about 3 guys in the entire cinema and there were jokes in the screenplay that only an Englishman would get. Going to see this earned me enough “chick flick” points that I got to see Tomb Raider

  • Alexander
The story of the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (Farrell), who led his armies through 22,000 miles of conquests in just eight years and by the age of 25 had conquered 90% of the known world.

There’s some definite star material in the movie, and a couple of minor characters to watch for, though I’m not sure how well Colin Farrell can carry the movie as leading man. Still, with Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins worthing with him, the movie has a chance. Just a shame that Val Kilmer had to hitch a ride! Keep an eye open for Brian Blessed though.

  • Ocean’s Twelve
With Tess and Rusty at his side, Daniel Ocean must find one more conspirator before he can pull off heists in three different European cities — Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam.

Another big ensemble cast movie, heavy on the big names: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Robbie Coltrane.

Watch for Eddie Izzard, Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones too!

  • Blade: Trinity
Framed by the Vampire Nation for a series of brutal murders, the Daywalker finds allies in a group of vampire hunters, the Nightstalkers, and together they wage a battle that leads all the way to Dracula himself.

Comic book to screen adaptions have been patchy in the past, but the Blade franchise seems to have managed to be worth watching, if for no other reason than I’m a fan of Wesley Snipes (just ask the wife how many times I’ve re-watched Rising Sun and the Art of War!)
