I was looking through a bunch of fils on our old desktop machine and ran across one of the famous “you might be a ____________________ if …” lists. One of the questions struck a note or two:

You might be an engineer if you can name 6 Star Trek episodes

To which we added a further challenge:

Ok, so you proved you know Star Trek … now how about naming 6 Stargate SG-1 episodes

and if that’s not too easy

And last but not least, name 6 episodes from Babylon 5

I just read my wife’s ‘currently reading‘ page and it caused a deep sigh. This is where you’ll hear me start a sentance with ‘I remember when…‘ as I was hit with this wave of nostalgia.

I remember when… I could read a book for pleasure. It seems right now that one of my major hobbies has been subverted by the required reading of the VLI course. Reading for pleasure … I think I remember what that’s like!

*sigh* I have this pathetic, sad little page in my diary of “books I want to read when the course is done.” From what I hear it’s a common phenomenon too: other VLI people have made similar lists of “things I have to put off until I graduate VLI”.

Dont get me wrong here, its a wonderful course and doing the world of good for me on so many levels. On the other hand it’s sinking in to my pea-sized brain when they said initially “you’ll have to make some sacrifices” what they really meant, and that a sacrifice usually hurts!

Spent yesterday freaking out over a bunch of things

• there’s a final exam tonight for VLI-AD and I am nervous as it gets (even though I’ve studied, I still feel vastly un-prepared)
• I am planning the church men’s retreat as my leadership project and that has a whole section to itself
  • The person printing the brochures arrived at normal time, where my emotional state would have liked them to be early - the intervening hour was spent in a tail spin saying “what if they dont come, where are they already?”
  • Panic that I’d missed visiting the location of the retreat, thereby “standing up” the nice folks who were making special arrangements to accomodate a visit
  • Second-guessing the price - one person making a negative comment about it
  • Freaking that there wont be a speaker - I assumed that someone else would be contacting potential people, and the panic was in full force that I was meant to after all

All in all, enough panic that I was in a tail spin and feeling physically ill for most of the day. God is gracious though: it turns out the visit to Camp Mihaska is next week and, yes, the assumption was a fair one (though there was a gentle rap on the knuckles to be more clear next time!)

Totally wierd feeling of deja-vu last night - Steve Robbins began talking about the history of the Greek city of Corinth - background information to help us understand the books of 1 and 2 Corinthians. He went off into discussions of the Greek god Asclepius … did he read my blog? () Seriously, it was totally boggling to see that my recent research to satisfy the urge for science fiction of the Stargate SG-1 variety really helped to bolster the theology we’re learning in the VLI lectures.
