Somehow the wording on the corporate safety calendar (one of those page-per-day tear off ones) struck me as wrong:

Are you interested in real action? Join the HAZMAT Team. Call ____ for information.

If that were printed on a sticker about business card size and stuck inside a British telephone box in London somewhere, it wouldnt look out of place next door to the many adverts for prositutes. Scary.

Interesting crop of movies coming in the next few weeks:

October 1st

  • Shark Tale
When the son of the shark boss (De Niro) of a crime family appears to have been killed, a fast-talking fish named Oscar (Smith) poses as the infamous killer “Sharkslayer”. As he is soon to find out, his claim may have serious consequences.

How can you argue with Will Smith, Robert DeNiro, Rene Zellweger, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Martin Scorsese, Peter Falk and Ziggy Marley?

  • November 19th

  • National Treasure
Benjamin Franklin Gates (Cage) descends from a family of treasure-seekers who’ve all hunted for the same thing: a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers prior to the Revolutionary War. Ben’s close to discovering its whereabouts, as is his competition, though the FBI is also hip to the hunt.

As soon as I saw the trailer, it was obvious this would be out around thanksgiving to stir the national spirit, but did they have to cast Sean Bean (an Englishman) in the role of the bad-guy? Nicolas Cage does a great turn as a quirky main character, and I am sure that the interplay between Nic and Sean will be fun to watch.

  • Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
A month into her relationship with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget Jones (Zellweger) is growing increasingly uncomfortable. Apart from discovering that he’s a conservative voter, she has to deal with a new boss, a strange contractor, and the worst vacation of her life. And then there’s Daniel Cleaver (Grant) popping up again….

The original Bridget Jones movie was fun - when we went to see it, there was only about 3 guys in the entire cinema and there were jokes in the screenplay that only an Englishman would get. Going to see this earned me enough “chick flick” points that I got to see Tomb Raider

  • November 26th

  • Alexander
The story of the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (Farrell), who led his armies through 22,000 miles of conquests in just eight years and by the age of 25 had conquered 90% of the known world.

There’s some definite star material in the movie, and a couple of minor characters to watch for, though I’m not sure how well Colin Farrell can carry the movie as leading man. Still, with Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins worthing with him, the movie has a chance. Just a shame that Val Kilmer had to hitch a ride! Keep an eye open for Brian Blessed though.

  • December 10th

  • Ocean’s Twelve
With Tess and Rusty at his side, Daniel Ocean must find one more conspirator before he can pull off heists in three different European cities — Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam.

Another big ensemble cast movie, heavy on the big names: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Robbie Coltrane.

Watch for Eddie Izzard, Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones too!

  • Blade: Trinity
Framed by the Vampire Nation for a series of brutal murders, the Daywalker finds allies in a group of vampire hunters, the Nightstalkers, and together they wage a battle that leads all the way to Dracula himself.

Comic book to screen adaptions have been patchy in the past, but the Blade franchise seems to have managed to be worth watching, if for no other reason than I’m a fan of Wesley Snipes (just ask the wife how many times I’ve re-watched Rising Sun and the Art of War!)

    Today, on the haiku channel:

    Sore throat, aching head.
I want to be back in bed.
    I really hate colds.

Second day of Haiku, commenting on an event in the office this morning:

    Chopsticks - fifty cents
    Potato Head - ten bucks
    “Passion of the Spud”: priceless

    “Inappropriate”
    Someone said. Dissassembly.
    I found it funny.

    I merely laughed at it,
    found it humorous to see.
    Am I a bad believer?

Since everyone else is doing it (haiku that is), I guess I should play along:

    A haiku a day…
    …keeps the physician away!
    Poetic healthcare!

Who says there’s no art in this engineering soul, huh?

    From Check Mark:

My deepest, most secret fantasy, however, is to come home one day to find [my wife] watching The Day the Earth Stood Still, all by herself and in complete solemnity.

Of course, that’ll happen about the same time she catches me listening to her Alanis Morissette cds. Not any time soon.

I laughed out loud - a man after my own heart - I will leave the room when I hear a track by Alanis Morissette.

SWOTSF analysis goes into 6 points of a given project

    • Strengths
    • Weaknesses
    • Opportunities
    • Threats
    • Successes
    • Failures

It’s depressing right now to look at a failed project and write up weakness, threat and failure and see how much relates back to me … and you wonder why the lyrics to a Pink song

Everyday I fight a war against the mirror
I can’t take the person starin’ back at me
    I’m a hazard to myself
    Don’t let me get me
    I’m my own worst enemy

Seem so appropriate at this time! (Can you say “downturn in the mood”?)

    Don’t Let Me Get Me
    © 2002 Pink from M!ssundaztood

Never win first place, I don’t support the team
I can’t take direction, and my socks are never clean
Teachers dated me, my parents hated me
I was always in a fight cuz I can’t do nothin’ right

Everyday I fight a war against the mirror
I can’t take the person starin’ back at me
    I’m a hazard to myself

    Don’t let me get me
    I’m my own worst enemy
Its bad when you annoy yourself
    So irritating
Don’t wanna be my friend no more
    I wanna be somebody else

I wanna be somebody else, yeah

LA told me, “You’ll be a pop star,
All you have to change is everything you are.”
Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears
She’s so pretty, that just ain’t me

Doctor, doctor won’t you please prescribe somethin
A day in the life of someone else?
Cuz I’m a hazard to myself

    Don’t let me get me
    I’m my own worst enemy
Its bad when you annoy yourself
    So irritating
Don’t wanna be my friend no more
    I wanna be somebody else

    Don’t let me get me
    I’m my own worst enemy
Its bad when you annoy yourself
    So irritating
Don’t wanna be my friend no more
    I wanna be somebody else

Doctor, doctor won’t you please prescribe somethin
A day in the life of someone else?
    Don’t let me get me

    Don’t let me get me
    I’m my own worst enemy
Its bad when you annoy yourself
    So irritating
Don’t wanna be my friend no more

First meeting of my new homegroup is tonight. Its not officially the first - we’re going for a “soft start” approach where the core team get together for a few weeks before opening the doors to the world. We’re going to work through some material and plan our program for the next couple of months. I am aware, thanks to the cross-cultural evangelism training of VLI, that I tend to value precision / accuracy over relationships. I am sincerely hoping that my guesses of core team members will balance this factor out! However, its interesting to note that my training for tonight is all about the anatomy of a typical evening (in terms of a very rough time breakdown) and the schedule of what will happen on what weeks for the rest of the year. Hmm.

I’m nervous, if truth be told. I really like the team I have - one couple are new friends and serving in this group will help me get to know them better (hereafter known as “C+C“). The other couple are folks Ive known for about 5 years on and off, and have wanted to spend some quality time with them for ages now (aka “J+T“). These 2 couples are my primary focus right now - thinking about how to develop their leadership skills, and encourage them forward in their walk of faith. When others join the group I am really hoping that C+C and J+T will test the waters and lead some.
